TRANSLATION OF DRAMA THE BALLAD OF THE SAD CAFÉ, EDWARD ALBEE/ CARSON MCCULLERS INTERPRETATION, TRANSLATION, ANALYSIS

The first and until now last translation of the drama The Ballad of the Sad Café which was written by Edward Albee based on the novella by Carson McCullers was published 51 years ago. This fact leads us to the assumption that the translation is already outdated. In this thesis we deliver a new translation and by comparing and contrasting the two texts we draw conclusions on aging of translations, elements that cause aging of translations and ways how current theatre-makers handle an outdated text nowadays. The first part of the thesis consists of the drama's literary analysis. The following translation analysis represents a preparatory phase for the translation itself. We also provide a theoretical background on repeated translation, aging of translation and translation of dramatic texts. The new translation of the play is compared and contrasted in the last part in which we cover the most important issues described in the translation analysis. We conclude by comparing our findings with the staging of the play from 2005 in which the earlier translation was used. Translation and study of Crépuscules by Joël Casséus

This diploma thesis on Commented Translation of Joël Casséus' Crépuscules consists of translation of the first three chapters of the Quebec novel Crépuscules into the Czech language and subsequent expert commentary. This commentary focuses on the analysis of the novel genre that balances science fiction and modern myth, as well as the Christiane Nord analysis of the original text through which it explores external factors such as author, reader, intention, text function or its motive and intra-text factors such as theme and content, composition, nonverbal components, lexicon, syntax, and suprasegmental phenomena. Subsequently, in the commentary, we deal with translation problems, their solutions and applied translation procedures such as transposition, modification, compensation, generalization or specification.

The bachelor thesis focuses on the Czech translation of an American television series Friends. Firstly, I briefly describe the process of audiovisual translation, than I introduce the TV show its plot and main characters. The next part includes the analysis of the first and the last season; I provide examples of difficulties in translating English dialogues to Czech. The goal of the thesis is to prove that the globalization, the Internet and the faster spread of information; they all influence our knowledge about American culture and, consequently, the Czech translation.

What Czech character has Uncle Tom's Cabin by H. B. Stowe acquired since the 2nd half of the 20th century?: E. and E. Tilsch's translation of 1957

The thesis focuses on the Czech translation of Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel Unce Tom's Cabin, or Life Among the Lowly (1957) by Emanuela Tilschová and Emanuel Tilsch. The translation was aimed at children; therefore the specifics of children's literature and of the translation thereof will be described. The thesis will emphasise the role of the Czechoslovak social and cultural context in the given period, i.e. approximately between the year 1948 and the late 1950s. Special attention will be paid to the production of Státní nakladatelství dětské literatury/ State Children's Literature Publishing House. After the examination of the context, the thesis will look at the translation itself and compare it with four selected books published in the same period, the focus being primarily the language of the translations. Finally, selected passages of the translation will be analysed and compared with the relevant parts of the original. Czech perception of Claudel's Break of Noon

The master's thesis focuses on a translatological analysis of the original text and two available translations of the Break of Noon, a play written by a significant French playwright and diplomat Paul Claudel. Miloš Marten was the first to translate the play into Czech in 1910. The second translation was done by Vladimír Mikeš and was published in 2012. Given the time span of more than a hundred years between the translations, it is not only interesting to compare them linguistically but also to make a comparison of their reception. Therefore, the thesis deals with the reception of the texts and its development over time. The thesis defines Paul Claudel's place in French culture in the past and today and how its play is perceived in the Czech context. The thesis studies the position of the first translation in the time of its publishing and right after it. The thesis seeks to determine the reasons for the second translation to be commissioned and assess the position of the new text in the target culture. To determine the position of the translations in the Czech context and their potential effect on the culture, the thesis uses the polysystem theory which seems to be the most convenient tool as it studies to what extent translation literature affects domestic literature.

The Book "Nichts als Gespenster" and its Interpretation from the Czech and German Point of View

Interpretation belongs to one of the key principles in the literary studies. This bachelor thesis presents an interpretation of one particular literary sample, the book Nichts als Gespenster by Judith Hermann. This literary work belongs to the German literature of the 21st century. The main basis of this bachelor research is constituted by the interpretation of all seven short stories from the above-mentioned book. Moreover, it will deal with different points of view that are presented by characters and their behaviour. The interpretation and the comparison of all seven stories would provide an opportunity not only to indicate their similar features, but also to reveal differences between them. An important part of the interpretation is constituted by the comparison between the original German text and the text translated in the Czech language. It enables the new discoveries both in the fields of linguistics and literature. Moreover, the readers' reviews play a considerably important part for this thesis as they provide their reflection on the text that brings even wider spectrum of views to work with.

It is divided into two parts: the first one is dedicated to historical development and description of the City of Tabor, and explains the term epigraphy. The second part addresses Latin inscriptions, their analysis, interpretation and historical context.

Lesson Activity Toolkit in the Smart Notebook software for interactive board

Lesson Activity toolkit is a collection of mini applications (applets) in the Smart Notebook software. It serves for creating educational materials with the use of the interactive board. It is a flash application which can be loaded with an extra content. This Bachelor's thesis focuses on these applications - it will elaborate on how these activities are used in contemporary education, how to work with them and which modules are not present in the gallery and could expand it efficiently. It also examines the possibility of creating and translating these modules and their implementations into the SmartNotebook program interface.
